The American Cancer Society announced today that the total number of U.S. cancer deaths declined sharply in 2004, in large part due to the decreased mortality of colorectal cancers as a result of early detection and treatment.
The news comes just two months after data released by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) showed Capital Health Plan as the top health plan in America for colorectal screening rates. The data is from NCQA’s 2006 HEDIS® which was used in U.S. News and World Report’s November 6, 2006 report on America’s Best Health Plans.
“We are thrilled that a corner has been turned in the fight against cancer, and as we’ve known for a long time, regular colorectal screening is a huge part of ensuring early detection of life-threatening cancers both for men and women,” said Tara Loucks, ARNP-C, clinical director of CHP’s Colon Screening Program. “We are honored by our national recognition and congratulate our physicians for encouraging their patients to focus on preventive care. Most important, our members are to be commended for their willingness to take personal responsibility for managing their health in this way.”
According to the American Cancer Society data, the largest drop in deaths among the major cancers was in colorectal cancer, which dropped by 1,110 in men and by 1,094 in women. Screening exams, which allow doctors to detect polyps and remove them before they develop into colon cancer, are the key to early detection.
Colon screening is recommended for everyone beginning at age 50, and earlier if a family risk exists. To get tested, CHP members may call their primary care physician or call CHP's Colon Screening Program directly at 523-7350.
Capital Health Plan, the area’s only local health plan, is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and provides health care coverage for more than 113,000 people in Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla and Jefferson counties.
Effectiveness of Care is measured by the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) which is a registered trademark of NCQA.
