PRIME TIME Profile
Betty Jones
CHP Active Senior
"Nothing helps me get my attitude right better than walking." That is Betty Jones, 68, on the mental benefits of her daily three-mile walk. She began walking at 40: "I don't know why I started ... but I had teenagers, and it was definitely relaxing. Also, dropping a few pounds was thrilling." Almost 30 years later, Betty still relishes her personal thinking time. Physical benefits? Outstanding: "I weigh 125 pounds, take no pills, have low-normal blood pressure, good cholesterol numbers, and wake up full of energy." Don't think, readers, that you need 30 years to get in shape. Last summer Betty tried swimming: "After one length, I felt my lungs would burst." Now she swims 750 yards, without stop, three to five times a week. "That proved to me I could get into shape, even at my age. My brother is a physician and cheers me on. He's 80. He says we cannot overestimate the benefits of exercise." Cheers to you, Betty, for cheering us on.
