Attention College-Bound Members (and Other Travelers)

What is CHP'S Away from Home Care, and who is eligible?

The Away from Home Care program can provide healthcare for college students, members on out-of-area work assignments, and children living with a custodial parent in another area. To be eligible, you or your dependents must be non-Medicare members, temporarily living away from home for at least 90 consecutive days.

The program provides a guest membership in a Blue Cross and Blue Shield HMO, available in over 200 cities and every state. As a guest member, you have a primary care physician, do not complete claim forms, and pay only required copayments of the guest plan.

How do you enroll?

Enrollment in Away from Home Care is not automatic, but the application is simple. Call Member Services at 383-3311. If there is a participating HMO where you are going, we will help you complete the application. Also be sure to contact us to re-enroll each year.

What about filling prescriptions?

You may fill prescriptions at any Walgreens pharmacy in the nation by presenting your CHP membership card. This benefit is a part of your CHP membership, not the guest HMO membership. Your CHP prescription benefit and copayments apply. (Important: Tell the Walgreens personnel that the letters "CHP" are not part of your membership number. A number preceded by "CHP" will not process correctly.)
