Free Health Education Classes for Our Members
CHP welcomes Tequila Hagan as Wellness Program Coordinator.
Educated at Valdosta State University and Troy State University, Ms. Hagan says that the favorite part of her work is promoting prevention and awareness.

Your registration will be confirmed by phone prior to class. Classes are held at CHP's meeting rooms at Governor's Square Boulevard.
Orientation for Members
Both current and new members are invited to attend a 30-minute seminar about using CHP. No reservations needed, just come to the Governor's Square Boulevard health center at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday or third Tuesday of each month.
New Diabetic Class
This class is designed to teach diabetic meal planning and carbohydrate counting to newly diagnosed diabetics or those wanting a comprehensive review. Discussion will include complications of diabetes, benefits of optimal blood sugar control, exercise and weight loss tips.
Follow-up Diabetes Class
This class is designed to reinforce previous meal planning and carbohydrate counting education. A comprehensive review of current nutrition information will be presented and there will be a question and answer session. It is recommended that all patients who attend the New Diabetic Class attend at least one follow-up session within 2 weeks to 1 month after initial education.
Diabetes Self-Management
This 12-hour comprehensive class meets 2 hours each week for 6 weeks. Topics covered include medications; blood glucose monitoring; foot, skin, eye and dental care; weight loss; portion control; exercise tips; and goal setting.
Weight Loss Class
This program is designed to teach meal planning and offer support for weight loss. Participants will be given a starter packet including the tools and information needed to begin a healthier style of eating. Physical activity and good choices are the basis of the plan.
Continual Weight Loss Plan
Members will attend one newcomer meeting and subsequently will attend a weekly "weigh-in" meeting held by the dietitian. Weights will be done in private, followed by a motivational talk and question and answer session.
Cholesterol/Heart Disease Class
This class will teach how to lower your risk for heart disease by positively changing blood lipid levels. Discussion includes difference between "good" and "bad" cholesterol, foods that positively and negatively affect blood lipids, and tips for exercise and weight loss. Heart healthy recipes and cooking tips will be included.
Asthma Management
All CHP asthma patients are invited. You will learn techniques to control your asthma and to prevent asthma attacks. Please bring your peak flow meter to the class. Parents are encouraged to attend with their children. However, if the child with asthma is under the age of 5, only the parents should attend.
Freedom from Smoking
This 8-week class, taught by a Big Bend Area Health Education Center trainer, uses American Lung Association material. It covers the nicotine cycle, coping strategies, withdrawal symptoms, lifestyle changes, and much more. Classes meet weekly for 2 hours, with an additional session on quit week. The meetings are held at Big Bend Area Health Education Center. CHP will reimburse the $25 fee (payable at the first class) to members completing the full course.
Kids and Family Healthy Eating and Active Living Series
For children ages 9-12 and their caregivers, this six-week series guides families toward healthier eating and physical activity. Children must be accompanied by at least one primary caregiver. Children and caregivers will meet together and separately. Content includes nutrition, healthy food preparation, indoor and outdoor physical activity, fostering self-esteem, and how to be more active as a family. There is no copay for participation.
The LEARN* Program for Weight Control
The LEARN* Program (Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, Relationships, and Nutrition) is a 12-week program facilitated by a registered and licensed dietitian. Using a step-by-step approach, participants uncover when, how, and why their individual behaviors occur. They develop skills to set achievable goals and counter pressures to overeat and be inactive. The LEARN* focus is healthier habits for lasting change.
CPR for Infant and Child*
This class is for anyone interested in the health and safety of children. American Heart Association instructors cover safety topics including injury prevention and recognition, CPR, and foreign body airway management for both conscious and unconscious infants and children. Completion cards available upon request.
CPR for Adults*
This training will teach participants CPR and foreign body airway management for both conscious and unconscious adult victims. An important part of this training is a presentation on 'healthy heart living,' covering subjects such as diet, nutrition, and how to reduce your risk of heart disease. Completion cards available upon request.
Newborn Care
In this class parents-to-be learn about basic infant care and common problems that may occur in their newborns. Prospective, adoptive and new parents are all welcome to attend.
