At last summer is here. Many of us relish the thought of a special vacation or just the relaxed feel of long, warm days. For many families summer is a break from the fast-paced days of the school year. It's a great time to focus on healthier habits for the whole family. Here are a few ideas to make the most of your summer while at home and away:
- Summer is typically the best time to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Make it a goal to try three fruits or veggies you've never tasted before. This is especially fun while traveling!
- Cool salads are a great choice in hot weather. Try five or more fruits and veggies in your salad. The more variety in your food, the more nutrients your body gets. Strawberries, raspberries, nuts, and fresh herbs like dill and mint make delicious, nutritious additions to salads.
- Freeze grapes, blueberries, and other favorite fruits for refreshing treats.
- Carry water with you when you are out and about. Staying hydrated is especially important in hot weather.
- Many people return from vacation with photos, souvenirs . . . and extra pounds. Keep in mind that eating in restaurants is not a necessity. Choose accommodations with refrigerators or small kitchens. If this is not an option, buy a small cooler and stock up on fresh foods from the local grocery. Many highly nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and crackers, peanut butter, and nuts do not need refrigeration. Make it a goal to eat only one meal per day in a restaurant. This tip also saves money, which allows for a longer vacation!
- Vacation is also the perfect time to be more physically active. Lack of free time is no longer an excuse. Plan outdoor vacations where the opportunity for activity is abundant, and whenever possible, walk. Wear a pedometer and compete to see who gets the most steps.
Whether traveling or hanging around home this summer, take the opportunity to look and feel your best by treating your body right with the right foods and plenty of activity!
